TTS revamps Stena Carisma linkspans 04.04.2008

TTS has carried out a major upgrade project to extend the life of access ramps serving a Stena Line route.

After ten years in use, the manoeuvring systems for access ramps on Stena Line’s HSS Stena Carisma in Gothenburg and Fredrikshamn needed to be replaced. In the original system, all the bearing surfaces worked with steel-to-steel contact, and the arrangement of bearings was insufficient to cope with the comparatively high forces.

TTS Port Equipment modified the design of the ramp manoeuvring systems in order to reduce wear on the bearing surfaces. The project included the delivery, installation and testing of the hardware, as well as ensuring approval from Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.

“The systems were improved by implementing a revised design for bearing surfaces using bronze bushings instead of the previous steel/steel bearings,” said Uno Nilsson, aftersales manager at TTS Port Equipment. “In addition, we supplied a new fender panel for the Gothenburg linkspan, and instituted an upgraded programme for periodic maintenance of the system.”

“The upgrade project will extend the lifetime of the linkspans by at least ten years,” said Ingemar Sörensson, superintendent, Stena Line.
